Holistic Pelvic Care™ is a unique and gentle physical therapy technique that brings balance and appropriate tone to the pelvic floor musculature. Created by Portland-based physical therapist Tami Kent, Holistic Pelvic Care™ addresses not only the physical aspects of pelvic dysfunction, but also the emotional, spiritual, and psychological contributors as well.
In her third year of medical school, she met Tami Kent, PT during a lecture on the Wild Feminine and female pelvic floor therapy and began training immediately and became certified as a Holistic Pelvic CareTM Provider.
Holistic Pelvic Care became the bridge between her previous experience health and fitness and her current degree in naturopathic medicine.
The intricate muscles of the pelvic bowl can become imbalanced from illness, stress, or trauma, just as other muscles in the body can become tightened, stressed, and overworked. The Holistic Pelvic Care™ technique involves intervaginal trigger point release, myofascial massage therapy, breath work and meditation. This technique brings strength and synergy to the musculature, increases blood flow to the pelvic organs, and balances the pelvic bowl. This combination allows for a complete and holistic approach toward pelvic dysfunction.
Who benefits from Holistic Pelvic Care™?
Any woman who desires to reestablish a connection with her pelvic bowl or nurture her body in a holistic manner will benefit from treatments. Specific pelvic complaints are addressed by pelvic floor therapy as well. These concerns include (but are not limited to):
- Painful sexual activity, intercourse, or sexual dysfunction
- Urinary leakage or incontinence
- Chronic bladder or vaginal infections
- Fertility support
- Preparing for conception/pregnancy
- Postpartum complaints and recovery
- Pelvic congestion
- Uterine prolapse
- Menstrual pain
- History of pelvic trauma or abuse
- Healing after pregnancy loss or abortion
- Low back pain not relieved by other treatment
- Fecal leakage or incontinence
What can I expect from a treatment?
You can expect anywhere from 2-8 treatment sessions to address your specific pelvic concerns. A more detailed estimate of treatment duration will be discussed during the first appointment after considering the specific pelvic concerns and dysfunction.
The first visit typically lasts 60 minutes in order to gather information, perform a physical exam, assess the pelvic floor, and determine the direction of treatment. This is also the time we will review the female anatomy, musculature, and nerve supply to ensure understanding of the pelvic floor and potential causes of your pelvic dysfunction. A short treatment may be initiated during the first visit if time allows.
The follow up visits will be 30-45 minutes once the initial goals have been established.
